Ilich Ramírez Sánchez (born 12 October 1949), also known as Carlos the Jackal, is a native Venezuelan convicted of terrorist crimes, and currently serving a life sentence in France for the 1975 murder of an informant for the French government and two French counter-intelligence agents. While in prison he was further convicted of attacks in France that killed 11 and injured 150 people and sentenced to an additional life term in 2011, and then to a third life term in 2017.

The man known as 'Carlos the Jackal' is to go on trial in France for an attack on a shopping centre 43 years ago.

A car bomb explodes outside an anti-Syrian newspaper in Paris, 1982. One person is killed and 60 are injured. This man, later identified as Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, is eventually jailed for the bombing and several other attacks. Now he is in court again, this time over a hand grenade thrown to a shopping centre in 1974. Two people were killed. His wife, who´s also his lawyer, says the case is politically motivated.

—It is obviously a case that is solely political and nothing else. There is no reason to be judging him again. Therefore it is probe that this is a political decision on behalf of the French state to fabricate trials.

The media came up with the nickname Carlos the Jackal. It´s for the title of a book which became a popular 1973 movie, The Day of the Jackal told the story of a highly paid assassin who couldn´t be caught.

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, seen here in court in 2000, was born in Venezuela. By the age of 24 he joined the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. He was eventually arrested by French police in Sudan in 1994. He´s already serving 2 life sentences after being found guilty of 4 bombings in France but his lawyer says this trial won´t be fair.

If he is found guilty Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, who´s now 67, could be facing a third life sentence.
