Carlos
historia. Los personajes giran alrededor de la política…
Carlos,
also known as Carlos the Jackal, is a
2010 French-German biographical
film/miniseries about the
life of the 1970s Venezuelan
terrorist Carlos the Jackal (Ilich Ramírez Sánchez), covering his
first series of attacks in 1973 until his arrest in 1994.
Carlos, the movie |
Ilich Ramírez Sánchez, the real-life "Carlos", saw extracts of the film and his lawyer threatened
legal action to prevent its general release, arguing that it could prejudice
future trial hearings for Carlos who
faces trial for at least four more attacks in France. He read the screenplay and criticized it for its
"deliberate falsifications of history, and lies". He was specifically
unhappy with a sequence depicting a hostage-taking by his gang at the 1975 OPEC conference in Vienna and how his methods were depicted: "Showing hysterical
men waving submachine guns and threatening people is completely
ridiculous," he insisted. "Things didn't happen like that. These
were professionals, commandos of a very high standard".
Édgar
Ramírez on 'Carlos'
Venezuelan actor Édgar
Ramírez talks about the movie 'Carlos',
in which he portrays the notorious international terrorist Ilich Ramírez Sánchez
—Carlos is a
person that you can like or not but as an actor did you come to like him?
—You have to. I
mean you have to connect to your character. There´s no other way for me to
portray a character and that´s why this process can be painful. It can be
difficult because you have to give up all your prejudices and you have to give
up all your emotions and conceptions about the world in order to embrace those
of your character. But that´s the way to go. You have to try to find ways to connect
to him, to build bridges and try to understand him although your stance in many
ways. I mean whether it´s political or ideological could be on the other side
of the spectrum… (From 2, 20)
—The celebrity
angle on this is a key part. Is it related to you?
—The notoriety
for me is a consequence of my job. The things that I do that are going to be
seen, hopefully, by many people and then you become notorious. That is part of
the job. But it is not a goal. It is a consequence. I think that for Carlos it
was a goal. He was like carrying out the revolution and he might be pretty much
convinced about the things that he wanted to change the world. The fact that
people would know about him was very important to him. I mean for him was very
important to be recognized and to be famous and what he was doing and what was
behind. That would be the biggest difference… (From 4, 38)
—Would you
describe this as a political film?
—No, I think
it´s a personal movie about politics. I think it´s a movie where politics are
part of the story. The characters orbit around politics but it´s not a
political movie because there is not an agenda behind this movie. It´s not even
a movie on terrorism, It´s a movie about a guy who happened to be working or
whose world was the world of terrorism. It´s a movie about all the human
experiences… (From minute 5)
