Richard Burton’s Hamlet

El Hamlet de Richard Burton es un nombre común para la producción de Broadway que tuvo lugar entre el 9 de abril y el 8 de agosto de 1964, en el Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, y para la grabación fílmica que se lanzó teatralmente y en video.

Mientras Burton y Peter O'Toole estaban filmando Becket, O´Toole decretó que cada uno debería interpretar a Hamlet después, bajo la dirección de John Gielgud y Laurence Olivier en Londres o Nueva York, con una moneda decidiendo qué director y qué ciudad. O’Toole ganó Londres y Olivier, y Burton ganó Gielgud y New York.

Debido a que Burton odiaba vestir disfraces y por cuestiones estéticas, Gielgud concibió una producción con una puesta “de ensayo”, con un set incompleto y los actores en ropa de calle.

 

La producción fue un éxito financiero, alcanzando las 137 presentaciones en Broadway (de las más largas en Nueva York). La popularidad fue debida también a la atención que recibió Burton por su romance con Elizabeth Taylor, con la que se casó mientras la producción estaba en Toronto. La gente se amontonaba fuera del teatro de Nueva York para tener un vistazo de Burton y, algunas veces, de Taylor, después del show.

The insolence of office, and the spurns

That patient merit of th' unworthy takes,

When he himself might his quietus make

With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,

To grunt and sweat under a weary life,

But that the dread of something after death,

The undiscovered country, from whose bourn

No traveller returns, puzzles the will,

And makes us rather bear those ills we have

Than fly to others that we know not of?

Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,

And thus the native hue of resolution

Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,

And enterprise of great pitch and moment

With this regard their currents turn awry

And lose the name of action. -- Soft you now…
