The Flying Wallendas (Los Wallenda Voladores) realizan arriesgados actos como los de caminar sobre un cable sin la red de protección. Al principio fueron conocidos como The Great Wallendas, pero la prensa les puso el primer nombre en la década del ´40 y ha permanecido.

The Flying Wallendas (Carla, Karl, Raymond Chitty and Richard Guzman), 1962

Karl Wallenda nació en Magdeburg, Alemania, en 1905 en una vieja familia de circo y comenzó a realizar actos de acrobacia a la edad de 6. En 1922, Karl, junto a su hermano Herman, Joseph Geiger y una adolescente, Helen Kreis, armó su propio acto.

Con esta actuación viajaron por Europa por varios años y cuando John Ringling los vio en una función en Cuba rápidamente los contrató. En 1928 debutaron en el Madison Square Garden. La actuación se hacía sin red (se había perdido en el viaje) y la multitud les daba una ovación de pie.

En 1945, Karl desarrolló algunos de los actos más impresionantes, como el de la pirámide con silla. Continuaron realizando sus actos hasta enero de 1962 cuando, mientras trabajaban para el Shrine Circus, en Detroit, el hombre al frente del cable (Dieter Schepp) cayó y la pirámide colapsó. Tres hombres cayeron al piso, matando a Richard Faughnan, el yerno de Wallenda, y al sobrino Dieter Schepp. Karl se lastimó la pelvis y su hijo adoptivo, Mario, quedó paralizado de la cintura para abajo. La hermana de Dieter, Jana Schepp, cayó sobre la red, rebotando en ella y lastimándose la cabeza.

Hay varias ramas de los Wallendas en el circo hoy, la mayoría de ellos nietos de Karl Wallenda. Todavía hacen sus actuaciones regularmente y han sido reconocidos en el Guinness Book of Records…

… On November 2, 2014, Nik successfully crossed between two Chicago skyscrapers, the west tower of Marina City and the Leo Burnett Building. After accomplishing this feat, he successfully crossed the two towers of Marina City while wearing a blindfold in cold conditions with strong winds. He set two world records, one for the highest incline, 19 degrees, between the west tower and the Leo Burnett building and one for the highest blindfolded wire walk between the two towers of Marina City. Both crossings were broadcast live on Discovery Channel.

In February 2017, a rehearsal of the troupe's eight-person pyramid highwire act for Circus Sarasota (an attempt at a new Guinness World Record for height) turned awry when the pyramid collapsed, plummeting five of the performers to the ground while three others, including Nik Wallenda, managed to cling to the wire. Miraculously no one was killed, but all five performers were severely injured: Nik's sister, Lijana, suffered the worst injuries, breaking nearly every bone in her face.

Nik and Lijana became the first individuals to successfully cross New York's Times Square on a tightrope 25 stories above street level on June 23, 2019. The duo crossed from opposite ends of the wire, which measured 1300 feet (396 meters) long and was suspended between 1 Times Square and 2 Times Square. The stunt was broadcast live on ABC and marked Lijana's return to live performance since her accident. For the stunt, both Wallendas used safety harnesses, despite the family's long-standing objection to the use of safety devices. In contrast to his statements during his Niagara Falls walk, Nik Wallenda admitted he felt the use of a harness was important for Lijana's first highwire walk since her fall.

Vocabulario

A stunt performer, often referred to as a stuntman or stuntwoman, is a trained professional who performs daring acts, often as a career. Stunt performers usually appear in films or on television, as opposed to a daredevil, who performs for a live audience. When they take the place of another actor, they are known as stunt doubles.

Daredevils are distinct from stunt performers and stunt doubles; their performance is of the stunt itself, without the context of a film or television show. Daredevils often perform for an audience. Live stunt performers include escape artists, sword swallowers, glass walkers, fire eaters, trapeze artists, and many other sideshow and circus arts.

Some people act as both stunt performers and daredevils at various parts of their career. Examples include Buster Keaton, Harry Houdini, and  Hong Kong action film star Jackie Chan.

Nik Wallenda’s Sister Lijana: ‘I Broke Every Bone inMy Face’

In February, Nik Wallenda and other members of the famed Wallenda family of high-wire artists fell about 30 feet during a practice session, and some suffered serious injuries
