En 1932, Arbuckle firmó un contrato con Warner Bros. para protagonizar bajo su propio nombre en una serie de seis comedias, que se filmarían en los estudios Vitaphone en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Estos seis cortometrajes constituyen las únicas grabaciones de su voz. El comediante de cine mudo Al St. John (sobrino de Arbuckle) y los actores Lionel Stander y Shemp Howard aparecieron con Arbuckle.

Los cortos de Vitaphone tuvieron mucho éxito en Estados Unidos, aunque cuando Warner Bros. intentó lanzar el primero (Hey, Pop!) en el Reino Unido, la British Board of Film Censors citó el escándalo de Arbuckle y se negó a otorgar un certificado de exhibición.

El 28 de junio de 1933, Arbuckle había terminado de filmar las comedias. Al día siguiente, firmó un contrato con Warner Bros. para protagonizar un largometraje. Esa noche salió con amigos para celebrar su primer aniversario de bodas y el nuevo contrato con Warner Bros. cuando, según los informes, dijo: "Este es el mejor día de mi vida." Sufrió un ataque al corazón más tarde esa noche y murió mientras dormía. Tenía 46 años. Su viuda, Addie, solicitó que su cuerpo fuera cremado, ya que ese era el deseo de Arbuckle.

Vitaphone fue un sistema de películas de sonido utilizado para largometrajes y casi 1.000 cortos realizados por Warner Bros. y su estudio hermano First National de 1926 a 1931. Vitaphone fue el último sistema de sonido en disco analógico y el único que fue ampliamente usado y comercialmente exitoso. La banda sonora no se imprimió en la película en sí, sino que se emitió por separado en los registros fonográficos.

Muchos de los primeros film sonoros, como The Jazz Singer (1927), utilizaron el sistema Vitaphone. El nombre "Vitaphone" deriva de las palabras en latín y griego, respectivamente, "living" y "sound".
