Speaking about Pat

The Karate Kid Anniversary Panel
In this panel actor Ralph Macchio and Aly Morita (Pat Morita´s daughter) speak about Pat Morita, how he was as a father and the realities of being unemployed.

… Ralph Macchio: When I met with Pat, it was the first reading. It was evident that was a sort of soulful magic. For me it was just easy and when I mentioned soulful magic I realized that but for me it was just fluent and seamless. Just seems very natural and easy to do…
Journalist: This father-son relationship that we see in the film, did that come off screen as well? Did you have that sort of relationship from actor to actor? Was he giving you advice with things?
Ralph Macchio: … I think there was something like that. It was natural. There was kindred spirits, no. What I said “magical souls” This film oozes that. As I was watching tonight there´s still so many magical moments. This movie has so many scenes that are truly magical. It´s the right place, the right time between Pat and myself. We maintained the relationship. He certainly knew way before I did…
Journalist: Aly, everybody knows Pat as Miyagi. I´d like to know about Pat Morita, the man. Can you tell a little bit about it?
Aly Morita: He was a complicated man but a consummate entertainer. He was a comic at heart. He was a hard worker. He loved making people laugh and he was a great daddy. He loved his family very much but after Karate Kid he had a difficult time, balancing both… There are many aspects of Miyagi that were channeled from within my father. He did have some qualities of Miyagi too.
Journalist: Where was your father before getting called for the audition of Miyage?
Aly Morita: It came after many years of struggle. He was out of work. He was an out of work actor. He had turned Happy Days and had his own show Mr. T and Tina, for a very, very short time. That was, maybe, 4 or 5 years before Karate Kid. It was a struggle for him, for Asian American actors. There aren´t really many parts out there for them. So he roused to occasion and embraced this role of Miyage with everything he had… (From minute 12 to 17)

Para saber
The Karate Kid is a 1984 American martial arts drama film written by Robert Mark Kamen and directed by John G. Avildsen. It is the first installment in The Karate Kid franchise, and stars Ralph Macchio, Pat Morita, and Elisabeth Shue. The Karate Kid follows Daniel LaRusso (Macchio), a teenager taught Gōjū-ryū karate by Mr. Miyagi (Morita) to help defend himself and compete in a tournament against his bullies, one of which is the ex-boyfriend of his love interest Ali Mills (Shue).
The Karate Kid was theatrically released in the United States on June 22, 1984
The film is also notable for kickstarting the career of Macchio, as well as revitalizing the acting career of Morita, who was previously known mostly for comedic roles, and earned Morita a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
The Karate Kid is a semi-autobiographical story based on the life of its screenwriter, Robert Mark Kamen. At age 17, after the 1964 New York World's Fair, Kaman was beaten up by a gang of bullies. He thus began to study martial arts in order to defend himself. Kamen was unhappy with his first teacher who taught martial arts as a tool for violence and revenge. So he moved on to study Okinawan Gōjū-ryū karate under a Japanese teacher who did not speak English, but was himself a student of Chōjun Miyagi.
