La historia de Ip Man

A la edad de 16 años, con la ayuda de su pariente Leung Fut-ting, Ip se mudó a Hong Kong y allí asistió a la escuela St. Stephen's College, una escuela secundaria para familias ricas y extranjeros que vivían en Hong Kong. Seis meses después de mudarse a Hong Kong, un compañero de clase de Ip llamado Lai le dijo que un amigo del padre de Lai, que era un experto en técnicas de Kung Fu, vivía con ellos, y se ofreció a tener un combate amistoso con Ip. En ese momento, Ip estaba invicto, por lo que aceptó con entusiasmo el desafío. Fue a la casa de Lai un domingo por la tarde, y después de intercambiar breves bromas, retó al hombre a un duelo. El hombre era Leung Bik, y él fácilmente venció a Ip Man. Incrédulo por la velocidad con la que había sido vencido, Ip solicitó un segundo duelo y fue vencido nuevamente, igual de rápido. Desalentado por su derrota, Ip se fue sin decir una palabra y luego estuvo tan deprimido que no se atrevió a mencionar que sabía de Kung Fu. Una semana después, Lai le dijo que el hombre con el que había luchado preguntaba por él. Ip respondió que estaba demasiado avergonzado para regresar, momento en el cual Lai le dijo que Leung Bik había elogiado sus técnicas de Kung Fu y que él era el hijo de Leung Jan, quien había entrenado al maestro de Ip, Chan Wah-shun. Ip procedió a entrenar con Leung Bik, hasta la muerte de Leung en 1911.

Leung Bik (1845 - 1911), fue un artista marcial de Wing Chun. Fue uno de los maestros de Ip Man. Nació en Foshan en 1845. Practicó Wing Chun con su padre y gran maestro Wong Wah-bo. Debido a la situación política a fines de la dinastía Qing, Leung dejó Foshan para ir a Hong Kong, donde se ganaba la vida manejando un negocio de seda y satén en la calle Cha Wai en Sheung Wan.

REAL Ip Man Story (Yip Man)

It´s great to have a movie that brings to light the art of wing chun but it´s very important to acknowledge the actual person who started the movie. Ip Man was much more than simply Bruce Lee´s teacher. He opened the door to what has become an international known system of devastatingly effective hand-to-hand combat. When it comes to close quarters self-defense, experts the world over looked those trained under the Yip Man line of Wing Chun for effectiveness.

It´s of the utmost importance that we acknowledge the real Yip Man for what he gave the world. Ip Man was 12 when he started learning wing chun. His sifu was Chan Wah-shun, who he trained with for 3 years before he retired. Yip then learned from his older kung fu brother, until Yip turned 16 and went off to school in Hong Kong. While there Yip trained under Leung Bik, the son of Leung Yan, his teacher´s teacher. At 24 he returned to Foshan and became a police officer. He taught wing chun privately to friends and family in his spare time.

Later, when the communist party came to power, Yip Man fled to Hong Kong. It was there that he made teaching kung fu his profession and opened the first public wing chun school. When he first started teaching though, Yip Man had a hard time keeping students. Students would stay only a month or two and then quit. But he kept on believing in what he was doing, until after a while a few students got good enough to lead classes. These first students, Leung Sheung, Lok Yiu and Chung Shong-tin, paved the way for later students, including Bruce Lee, to come aboard.
