The Grandmaster es una película de artes marciales basada en la historia del gran maestro Ip Man. La película fue dirigida por Wong Kar-wai y está protagonizada por Tony Leung y Zhang Ziyi.

La película narra la vida del gran maestro de Wing Chun, comenzando en la década de 1930 en Foshan y pasando a cubrir su vuelo a Hong Kong después de la Segunda Guerra Sino-Japonesa, y los eventos que condujeron a su muerte.

La existencia pacífica de Ip Man se ve amenazada por la llegada de Gong Yutian, el gran maestro de artes marciales del norte de China, quien anuncia su retiro y nombra a Ma San como su heredero. Luego reconoce que el sur debería tener su propio heredero. Una serie de peleas estallan cuando varios maestros intentan desafiar a Gong, pero Ma San se los impide. Mientras los maestros del sur están deliberando sobre un representante, la hija de Gong Yutian, Gong Er, llega y trata de convencer a su padre de que no continúe la pelea, ya que siente que todos son indignos. Mientras tanto, los maestros del sur deciden que Ip Man los represente. Sin embargo, la "lucha" entre Ip Man y Gong resulta ser en realidad un intercambio de ideas filosóficas. Gong declara a Ip ganador y regresa al norte de China. Sin embargo, Gong Er se propone recuperar el honor de su familia desafiando a Ip Man...

Para saber

Zhang Ziyi es una actriz y modelo. Su primer papel importante fue en The Road Home (1999). Más tarde obtuvo reconocimiento internacional por su papel en Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon de Ang Lee (2000), que fue nominada a 10 Premios de la Academia.

En occidente Zhang es más conocida por sus apariciones en Rush Hour 2 (2001), Hero (2002) y House of Flying Daggers (2004). Sus obras más aclamadas por la crítica son Memorias de una geisha (2005) y The Grandmaster (2013).

Zhang nació y creció en Beijing, China. Su padre era contador y su madre maestra de jardín de infantes. Zhang comenzó a estudiar danza cuando tenía 8 años.

On the authenticity of the martial arts in the film

—Because I have some experience making action films like coaching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Heroe, House of Flying Daggers, and because of my dance training, it isn´t hard for me to make the action look real, but this time just to look the part wasn´t good enough. Wong wanted us to do the hard work. He wanted us to try as if we were martial art students not just pretend we know martial arts. Your body has to reflect it.

On working with director Wong Kar Wai

—It´s definitely a especial experience working with Kar Wai. Each time you go to set you have no idea what is to happen next or what will happen at the end. He works with you to give life to his characters. This is what I discovered. You first have to get to know Kar Wai and he has to get to know you. When the mutual understanding happens then the magic begins.

On her character “Gong Er”

—Gong Er is the female grandmaster in the film. She´s trained in the school of 8 diagrams. In traditional martial art families the females are not allowed to train. However the father secretly taught her when she was 5 years old and consequently caused a long shadow in her life.

More on her character

—Her father taught her that martial art was about being, knowing and doing. She grew up with these principles. Being herself, knowing herself and doing what she knows is right. I believe there´s a Gong Er in every woman.
