Pat Morita telling a joke

Foxx later gave him a role on his sitcom Sanford and Son in the early 1970s…

What did you do sir, to win your price?

For a time after the war, Morita´s family operated Ariake Chop Suey, a restaurant in Sacramento, California. Morita would entertain customers with jokes and serve as master of ceremonies for group dinners.

Morita began working as a stand-up comic after graduating from Armijo High School in Fairfield, California. He took the stage name "Pat Morita", in part due to the presence of comedians including Pat Henry and Pat Cooper, and in part due to memories of the priest he had befriended as a boy. Morita struggled for many years in comedy. Sally Marr, Lenny Bruce's mother, acted as his agent and manager in his early days. Morita sometimes worked as the opening act for singers Vic Damone and Connie Stevens and for his mentor, the comedian Redd Foxx. Foxx later gave him a role on his sitcom Sanford and Son in the early 1970s.

Funniest Joke I Ever Heard: Pat Morita
…The short sword. They have the long big samurai sword. I was in a tournament, watching a tournament in Japan recently where these guys who did the short sword demonstrations were so fascinating, they won the three prices.  I went to the guy that won the third price and said
“Excuse me, sir, but what did you do to win the third price in the short sword” He said “very simple. You see fly on the wall. Watch”
And the fly dropped death in two pieces. One flew over here. One flew over there.”
And I said “Oh, my goodness. This is something else.”
I went down to the second guy, the guy who won the second price.
“What did you do, sir, to win your price?”
He said
“See that fly on the wall?”
He talked just like Buddy Hackett.
“Watch”
Four pieces. Two flew over there. One flew this way. They were all dead.
Oh, boy. What did the grand price winner have to do to win his award?
I went down to the guy who won grand price and said
“Please, sir, what did you do to win grand price short sword demonstration?”
He says
“You see that fly on the wall over there? Watch”
And the fly still going around.
I said
“Big deal. The fly is still flying”
He said
“Yes, But that fly would never have children again.”
