The Bad and the
Beautiful tells the story of a film producer who alienates all around him…
In 1996, Douglas received an Honorary Academy Award for "50 years as a moral and creative
force in the motion picture community." The award was presented by
producer/director Steven Spielberg.
As a result of Douglas's stroke the previous summer,
however, in which he lost most of his speaking ability, his close friends and
family were concerned about whether he should try to speak, or what he should
say. Both his son, Michael, and his
long-time friend, Jack Valenti, urged
him to only say "Thank you", and leave the stage. Douglas agreed. But when standing in
front of the audience, he had second thoughts: "I intended to just say
'thank you,' but I saw 1,000 people, and felt I had to say something more, and
I did." Valenti remembers that
after Douglas held up the Oscar, addressed his sons, and told his
wife how much he loved her, everyone was astonished at his voice's improvement:
“The audience went wild with applause [and]
erupted in affection ... rising to their feet to salute this last of the great
movie legends, who had survived the threat of death and stared down the demons
that had threatened to silence him. I felt an emotional tidal wave roaring
through the Dorothy Chandler.”
In a 2014
article, Douglas cited The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, Champion, Ace in the Hole, The Bad and the
Beautiful, Act of Love, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, The Indian Fighter, Lust
for Life, Paths of Glory, Spartacus, Lonely Are the Brave, and Seven Days in
May as the films he was most proud of throughout his acting career.
He worked with
the greatest actors and actresses of his time: Barbara Stanwyck, Lauren Bacall, Doris
Day, Lana Turner, Anthony Quinn, Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles
Laughton, Peter Ustinov, Tony
Curtis, among others.

… the dark has a
light of its own. Kirk Douglas said that in The Bad and the Beautiful, one of
the best movies ever made. We´re celebrating and honoring Kirk Douglas tonight
because he´s done almost everything on film. He´s directed, he´s produced and
in the process he´s helped to harness the blacklist to pieces and of course
most memorably and most lastingly he´s acted. He´s done it the way he does
everything, with grace and courage. Whether he´s dealing with the character on
screen or with the old too real effect of a recent stroke. Courage remains Kirk
Douglas´ personal and professional hallmark. Most stars of his stature are
shaped out of mythic clay. Kirk Douglas never chose that. He doesn´t have a
single character that made him unique, instead he has a singular honesty, a
drive to be inimitable. That´s what animates all his roles from Spartacus to
Vincent Van Gogh. There´s a single thread drawing all his characters together.
It´s called conscious. Every person he ever played had one and because Kirk
Douglas never made his characters simple, no good guys or bad guys, he shaded
heroics with self-doubts and shaped his villainy with compassion. His
characters weren´t bigger than life. They were life reconverted, something we
all could identified with. Something that could touch us out there in the dark,
something that gave dark a life and a light of its own.
Ladies and
gentlemen, Kirk Douglas.
Thank you. I see
my four sons. They´re proud of their old man. And I am proud too. Proud to be a
part of Hollywood for 50 years. But this is for my wife Anne. I love you. And
unite I love all of you and I thank all of you for 50 wonderful years. Thank
you.

And after 103
long lived years Kirk Douglas has
passed on! He’s lived through two World
Wars, a Great Depression, fought
in WWII, helped end the Hollywood Blacklist, survived a
helicopter crash, survived a stroke, and lived on to be over 100. That is one
hell of a long gifted life. May he rest in eternal peace. Long Live Spartacus!
