Maria Ponce Camacho es una modelo española, concursante que
ganó el Miss Universo España 2018. Ponce hizo historia el 29 de junio de
2018 como la primera mujer abiertamente transgénero
en ser coronada Miss España. Ella
representó a su país en Miss Universo
2018 como la primera concursante abiertamente transgénero que compite por el título. No avanzó a la final.

Las personas transgénero
tienen una identidad de género que difiere del sexo asignado al nacer. Algunos transgéneros
que desean asistencia médica para la transición de un sexo a otro se
identifican como transexuales. Transgénero, a menudo abreviado como trans, también es un término general:
además de incluir a personas cuya identidad de género es opuesta a su sexo,
puede incluir personas que no son exclusivamente masculinas o femeninas. Otras
definiciones de transgénero también
incluyen personas que pertenecen a un tercer género. El término transgénero puede definirse de manera
muy amplia para incluir cross-dressers.
Ser transgénero
es independiente de la orientación sexual: las personas transgénero pueden identificarse como heterosexuales, homosexuales,
bisexuales, asexuales o pueden negarse a etiquetar su orientación sexual.
El grado en que las personas se sienten genuinas,
auténticas y cómodas dentro de su apariencia externa y aceptan su identidad
genuina se ha llamado congruencia
transgénero. Muchas personas transgénero
experimentan disforia de género, y
algunas buscan tratamientos médicos como terapia de reemplazo hormonal, cirugía
de reasignación de sexo o psicoterapia. No todas las personas transgénero desean estos tratamientos, y
algunos no pueden someterse a ellos por razones financieras o médicas.
Muchas personas transgénero
se enfrentan a discriminación en el lugar de trabajo y al acceder a
alojamientos públicos y a la asistencia sanitaria. En muchos lugares, no están
legalmente protegidos de la discriminación.

Cross-dressing is the act of wearing items of clothing commonly
associated with the opposite sex within a particular society. Cross-dressing has been used for
purposes of disguise, comfort, and self-expression in modern times and
throughout history.

She´s doing more than just representing Spain. She says she´s also representing
the world´s transgender community
—Being the first
transgender contestant at Miss Universe is a big sense of responsibility. It
gives me a lot of pride and personally I´m very proud to admit it here.
—And Miss
Universe is a woman that overcomes many fears and by that she´s able to hold
other women overcome their fears.
—The Miss
Universe Organization changed its rule to allow transgender contestants in 2012
but that hasn´t stopped some critics, even some fellow contestants, from
speaking out against Ponce´s participation.
—Valeria Morales,
representing Colombia, said this in a recent interview:
—I think beauty
pageants, like Miss Universe, are for women, for borne women.
—On Instagram
Ponce responded she respects Morales opinion and she wants to get to know her.
In another interview the 26 years old Ponce talks about what it means to be a
woman.
—I would say
that it´s not that you feel like a woman. You already are a woman. A transgender
is not a man or a boy who feels like a woman. She´s a transgender person. There
are no wrong bodies.
—Ponce says she
wants to use her platform to spot light the ignorance and discrimination surrounding
the transgender people.
—We don´t have the
same rights but we do have the same obligations…
—Discrimination
against transgender people is a global issue that has caused violence, poverty
and high rates of suicides in the community worldwide. In the US alone there´s
a lack of legal protection when it comes to education, housing and employment.
Only 21 states have laws and prohibited discrimination based on sexual
orientation and gender identity.
—Ponce´s
historic entry in this year competition will take place in Thailand which is
about to become the first Asian country to allow same sex civil partnerships.
