10 Best Answers in Miss Universe History
Natalie Glevoba, Mpule Kwelagobe, Gloria Díaz, Wendy
Fitzwilliam, Dayana Mendoza, Manpreet Brar, Janine Tugonon, Brook Lee, Sushmita
Sen and Lara Dutta give opinions – opinions about
women, pregnancy, the essence of women, etc.
—What is the
biggest challenge in your life?
Natalie Glevoba –
2005 Canada: The biggest challenge in my life is always trying to stay
positive. I consider myself the kind of person who always looks at the glass half
full instead of half empty and even though sometimes it´s difficult to look at
life that way I always try to maintain a positive outlook on life.
—If Miss
Universe would become pregnant during her reign should she be allowed to
continue as Miss Universe?
Mpule Kwelagobe –
1999 Bostwana: Personally I think Miss Universe is a symbol of a woman as well
as she´s celebrating her femenity. And I believe that if she got pregnant she
would not in any way interrupt her duty. But as a woman she should celebrate
her femenity.
—In the next day
or so a man will land on the moon. If a man from the moon landed in your
hometown, what would you do to entertain him?
Gloria Díaz –
1969 Philippines: Just the same things I do. I think if he has been on the moon
for so long I think when he comes over he wants to change.
—A woman who´s just
awaken from being asleep for 20 years. What would you tell her she´s missed?
Wendy
Fitzwilliam – 1998 T & T: She´s missed so much in terms of technology. But
unfortunately she has missed the clean air and regular climate. I´m going to
tell her that we have to… that we are in the process of turning that around.
That´s what she´s missing.
—Which do you believe,
men or women, have it easier in life?
Dayana Mendoza –
2008 Venezuela: Actually God made us to share and have differences but big
differences in women and men? Doesn´t matter what kind of life they live. The
difference is that men think. They think that the faster way to go to a point
is to go straight. Women know that the faster way to go to a point is go the
curves and fix every curls.
—If you had the
power to do anything you wish to improve the status of women in your country
what would you do?
Manpreet Brar – 1995
India: I would give the women in my country the ability and the right to choose
their lives, the right to do what they want to do with their lives and only
then they would be individuals and not just mothers, daughters or wives. But
individual… thinking, living individuals.
—As an
international ambassador, do you believe that speaking English should be a
pre-requisite to be Miss Universe?
Janine Tugonon –
2012 Philippines: For me being Miss Universe is not just knowing how to speak a
specific language. It´s being able to influence and inspire other people so
whatever language you have as long as your heart deserves it and you have a
strong mind to show people, then you can be Miss Universe.
—If there were
no rules in your life for one day and you could be outrageous, what would you
do?
Brook Lee – 1997
USA: I would eat everything in the world. You do not understand. I would eat
everything twice.
—What for you is
the essence of being a woman?
Sushmita Sen –
1994 India: I think just being a woman by itself, the very fact that you are a
woman is a gift from God, which all of us must appreciate. The origin of a
child is a mother, and is a woman. And a woman is the one who shares love. And
the woman shows the man what love, caring and sharing is about. That´s the
essence of a woman.
—Right now
there´s a protest outside here calling the Miss Universe Pageant disrespectful
of women. Convince them that they are wrong.
Lara Dutta –
2000 India: I think pageants like the Miss Universe pageants give us young
women a platform to foray in
the fields that we want to forge ahead,
be it entrepreneurship, be it in the armed forces, be it in politics. It gives
us a platform to voice our choices and opinions and makes us strong as we are
today.
Vocabulario
Foray: attempt, commitment.
She made a brief
foray into acting before
becoming a teacher.
Forge ahead: to make an
effort to achieve something in a short time.
Regardless of
the uncertainty, she plans to forge
ahead with her career.
