Los conflictos en Medio Oriente, Asia y África han incrementado la ola de refugiados a Europa. El conflicto sirio obliga a que un número
cada vez mayor se arriesgue en peligrosos viajes a Europa. La gente desplazada se refugia dónde puede, en parques,
plazas, fábricas abandonadas. Cáritas
ofrece algo de ayuda: traducción, asesoramiento legal. Sin embargo muchos refugiados bajan los brazos y deciden
retornar a sus países. No han sido bien recibidos en Europa: “no hay
integración en la sociedad alemana… no he logrado nada… dicen que somos

Conflict and
poverty in the Middle East, Asia and Africa have dramatically increased the
flow of refugees and migrants to Europe.
As the Syrian
conflict enters its fifth year, a combination of desperation and hope is
leading growing numbers of Syrians to attempt an extremely perilous journey
toward Europe.

Harrowing
stories have emerged of
death, starvation and abuse at the hands of people smugglers. While Italy has
received a slightly larger number of sea arrivals, Greece is the most seriously
affected so far. The situation of the new arrivals is dire:
Capacity on the Greek islands—Lesvos, Chios, Kos and Rhodes—is overstretched.
Most people
continue onward to Northern and Western Europe, including through the Balkan
countries of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania and Serbia, to seek asylum. People
stay where they can—occupying public parks, forests and abandoned factories
and other properties. Many countries in southern Europe are unprepared to meet
the growing needs.
Caritas is providing vital food, living items and dignified shelter so refugee
and migrant families—especially women, children and the elderly—can meet their
most basic human needs. Church partners also provide critical information,
translation and language services, as well as legal resources so refugees and
migrant families know their rights and options, and are able to make informed
decisions.

Harrowing: acutely distressing or painful.
Ultimately,
surviving abuse and living with the aftereffects can be harrowing.
Dire: ill, inauspicious, ominous, dismal.
The North Korean
leadership is well aware that the stakes are high, and that a breakdown in
talks with Washington could have dire consequences.

These refugees have come all the way from
Syria. Now they're smuggling themselves back. Zakariya has been living in
Germany since he fled his home country. But he says integration has been
difficult, and that his hosts view refugees as terrorists rather than Muslims.

1
Baden-Württemberg. Alemania.
—Vine a este país como refugiado hace dos años. Quería
hacerlo bien, exceder, y probarle a los alemanes que no somos solo refugiados. Me
siento un forastero aquí. No hay integración en la sociedad alemana. Hemos tratado
de integrarnos más de una vez pero para ser honestos son muy fríos y ni siquiera
tratan de aceptarnos. No he logrado nada. Pensé que podría hacerlo, ni siquiera
un uno por ciento.
No solo soy yo sino muchos otros jóvenes también.
Voy a regresar a Siria, ilegalmente, siguiendo la
misma ruta que usé para venir aquí.
Día
2
Tesalónica, Grecia.
La estación de ómnibus se ha convertido en un núcleo
para sirios como Zakariya.
Se estima que cientos pasan por aquí cada semana.
—Estoy tan nervioso que no veo la hora de llegar
allí, aún si el viaje es difícil, o hace frío o llueve.
Hay más de cincuenta sirios haciendo este viaje en
ómnibus de 5 horas.
Cada uno de ellos tiene sus propios motivos para
dejar Europa.
Día
3
Frontera griega-turca.
Los sirios se preparan para entrar ilegalmente a
Turquía, a pie.
La atmósfera es tensa. Muchos han sido arrestados
aquí en el pasado.
Zakariya tiene un último mensaje para sus ex
anfitriones:
—Es imposible para mí volver a Alemania u a otro
país europeo. Nosotros somos musulmanes pero ellos dicen que somos terroristas.
Nos miran y nos tienen miedo. Como si fuéramos monstruos, no seres humanos.
Todos en este grupo pasaron la frontera sin
problemas.
