Refugiados
de todos los colores y credos es lo que estamos viendo en estos días. Sin embargo
el tema de los refugiados ha estado
en las páginas de los diarios desde hace mucho tiempo. En el video de abajo
(traducido) un grupo de personas que viven en EEUU, también inmigrantes, se da
la tarea de preparar los lugares donde vivirán los refugiados que llegan al país. Lo hacen por amor y sin ningún
interés extra. ¿Qué es un refugiado? ¿Y la UNHCR? ¿Pogroms? Veamos.
A refugee, generally speaking, is a
displaced person who has been forced to cross national boundaries and who
cannot return home safely. Such a person may be called an asylum seeker until granted refugee
status by the contracting state or the UNHCR,
if they formally make a claim for asylum.
The lead international agency coordinating refugee
protection is the United Nations Office
of the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees (UNHCR). The United
Nations have a second Office for refugees,
the UNRWA, which is solely
responsible for supporting the large majority of Palestinian refugees.
The first modern
definition of international refugee
status came about under the League of
Nations in 1921 from the Commission
for Refugees. Following World War II,
and in response to the large numbers of people fleeing Eastern Europe, the UN 1951
Refugee Convention adopted the following definition of "refugee" to apply to any person
who:
"owing to well-founded fear of being
persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a
particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his
nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself
of the protection of that country; or who, not having a nationality and being
outside the country of his former habitual residence as a result of such
events, is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to return to it."

The repeated
waves of pogroms that
swept Eastern Europe in the 19th and
early 20th centuries prompted mass Jewish
emigration (more than 2 million Russian
Jews emigrated in the period 1881–1920). Beginning in the 19th century, Muslim people emigrated to Turkey from Europe. The Balkan Wars
of 1912–1913 caused 800,000 people to leave their homes. Various groups of
people were officially designated refugees
beginning in World War I.
Pogroms
The term is
usually applied to anti-Jewish violence
in the Russian Empire in the late
19th and early 20th centuries. It has been extended to include any attacks
against Jews and physical destruction
of Jewish property, as well as
looting of Jewish homes and
businesses, throughout history. The characteristics of a pogrom vary widely, depending on the specific incidents, at times
leading to, or culminating in, massacres. All outbreaks of antisemitic violence have become retrospectively known as pogroms.

Refugee Volunteers Help Incoming Refugees Settle in US
Accepting
refugees into the United States is a hot button political issue. But the debate
has not discouraged humanitarian efforts by Americans who are helping
immigrants start new lives. VOA's Nilofar Mughal visited a neighborhood in
Maryland where incoming refugee families are helped by people who were once
refugees themselves.

Sah y su familia también son refugiados. Vinieron de
Afganistán hace unos meses, viviendo en unos departamentos cercanos que también
fueron amueblados para ellos.
Estos voluntarios quieren devolver lo que les dieron
cuando vinieron a EEUU.
—Cuando llegué me sentía confundido. Hoy me siento
bien haciendo esto porque he vivido momentos difíciles como este.
Un programa para ayudar a los refugiados a
establecerse es implementado por una organización sin fines de lucro.
—Trabajamos con agencias de relocación. Encontramos que
familia está llegando, cuando, y luego nos conectamos con nuestros miembros. Tenemos
cerca de mil personas en nuestras listas y mandamos cerca de 150 cosas de lo
que necesitamos. Todo lo que hace a un hogar.
Han encontrado departamentos para 17 familias hasta
el momento, de lugares como Afganistán, Siria y otros países de África.
—Somos capaces de dirigir el amor de tantos
norteamericanos que saben que estos refugiados están viniendo y quieren que se

Qué lindo sería que todos nos pusiéramos a ver en
que podemos ayudar para que los refugiados
estén mejor, encuentren un lugar seguro para vivir y pueden trabajar. En
Argentina recuerdo que hace muchos años llegaron refugiados vietnamitas, que luego se marcharon a otro lado. ¿Será
que alguien puede ampliar? Ahora están los senegaleses, vendiendo baratijas en
el centro. ¿Hay alguna organización que los ayude a establecerse?
