Caroline is the elder sister of Prince Albert
II and Princess Stéphanie…
“I wanted to be
a ballerina…”
As a child, she
spent some of her time at the home of her maternal grandparents John B. Kelly Sr. and Margaret Major in Philadelphia. Grace
described Caroline and Stéphanie as "warm, bright,
amusing, intelligent and capable girls. They're very much in tune with their
era. Besides being good students, they are good athletes – excellent skiers and
swimmers. Both can cook and sew and play the piano and ride a horse. But, above
all, my children are good sports, conscious of their position and considerate
of others. They are sympathetic to the problems and concerns in the world
today."
Caroline spent the summer of 1971 at Camp
Oneka in the Poconos. While
there, unbeknownst even to her
parents, she was protected by the United
States Secret Service.
Caroline
continued her studies at the Sorbonne University, where she received a diploma
in philosophy and minors in psychology and biology. She is fluent in French,
English, Spanish, German and Italian.
She regularly
attends important social events in Monaco
related to the Monegasque Princely Family,
such as the National Day celebrations,
the annual Rose Ball, the Red Cross Ball and the Formula One competition Monaco Grand Prix.
Caroline was romantically linked to many famous men, including Guillermo Vilas, Henri Giscard d'Estaing, the son of former President of France Valéry Giscard d'Estaing; and French singer Philippe
Lavil. Following her divorce from Philippe
Junot, she was briefly engaged to Robertino
Rossellini, the son of Roberto
Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman.

Barbara Walters
interviews Princess Caroline of Monaco in 1985 - one of the most photographed
princesses - official duties - favorite art is ballet -
Princess
Caroline, one of the most beautiful and certainly one of the most photographed
princesses in the world. The paparazzi has chronologed her every movement, her
public and her private life, her happiest and her saddest moments, choosing
always to make her the subject of tabloid headlines. But public attention was
first drawn to the tiny principality of Monaco almost 30 years ago when film star
queen married Prince Rainier III. On April 19, 1956, Hollywood´s Grace Kelly became
Monaco´s Princess Grace. And the footage of the wedding was seen all over the
world. So when the children were born they too became the object of the public
love and curiosity.
—Your Highness,
you have 3 very attractive, very independent children.
—You can say
that again!
—The 2 girls
have a mind of their own. They´re very stubborn. They´re very difficult to move
around them. They have their ideas, their opinions. Caroline now, she´s a
mother. She´s gonna have both problems herself.
Since Princess Grace
death 3 years ago Princess Caroline has assumed many of her mother´s official duties
and she will remain the official hostage of the palace until her brother Albert
marries. So what does the first lady of Monaco do? Well, she shakes hands, she
gives away toys to children at Christmas and gifts to the elderly. She attends
the Red Cross Ball in summer and major social events in Monaco. And she gives trophies
to athletes and even…
But her favorite
duties have to do with the art, and the favorite of the arts is ballet. The
Royal Ballet performs here at the 100 year-old Monaco Opera House.
—Your Highness,
do you remember the first time you ever came here?
—Yes, I was 4
years old. It was for…
—And did you say
“oh, I want to run on the stage”
—Absolutely. I
wanted to be a ballerina. I took up dance lessons, ballet classes and kept that
up to 12 years and moved to modern ballet
—Why did you
decide not to be a ballerina?
—My parents made
me study. I had to go to school.
—This new ballet
company was a dream or a creation of your mother?
—Oh, yes. It was
a dream she was working very hard to achieve, and to see come through.
Unfortunately she didn´t have the time to see it completely fulfilled.
The Princess
herself attends rehearsals nearly every day.
It´s quite a new
image for the Princess who´s teenage first marriage to 38 year-old Philippe
Junot was a continued controversy. She was only 21. She´s been married to her
second husband, Stefano Casiraghi, for nearly 2 years. Although she says she
protects him for much of the royal ritual he does attend the Ball of the Rose
each year and mayor fundraising for the princess Grace Foundation in Monaco.
Princess Caroline and Stefano live in a small villa near the palace. Today
she´s 28 years old, happily married and a proud mother. Her son André is 15
months old. In spite of strong reservations about the press she granted us her
first American television interview in the palace garden. She speaks with
almost no accent and she´s fluent in 5 languages. Princess Caroline is as
gracious and as articulate as she is beautiful.
—Did you when
you were growing up wished that you were just plain Caroline Grimaldi?
—Oh, every day.
—Did you really?
—Yes… (4, 15
minutes)
