Boy Child" es una canción navideña
de 1956, escrita por Jester Hairston.
Se canta alrededor del mundo como villancico.
La canción tuvo su origen cuando Hairston estaba compartiendo una
habitación con un amigo. El amigo le pidió que escribiera una canción para una
fiesta de cumpleaños. Hairston
escribió la canción con ritmo de calipso porque la gente de la fiesta sería
principalmente de las Antillas. Algún
tiempo después, Walter Schumann,
cuando dirigía el Schumann's Hollywood
Choir, le pidió a Hairston que escribiera una nueva
canción navideña para su coro. Hairston
recordó el ritmo de su vieja canción y escribió nuevas letras para ella.
Harry
Belafonte escuchó la canción interpretada por el coro y pidió
permiso para grabarla. Fue grabada en 1956 para su álbum An Evening with Belafonte . En 1962, la versión completa también se
agregó a una reedición del álbum de Belafonte
lanzado anteriormente To Wish You a Merry
Christmas.
Una de las versiones más conocidas es la de Boney M. de 1978. Esta versión devolvió
