UFC

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is an American mixed martial arts promotion company based in Las Vegas, Nevada, that is owned and operated by parent company William Morris Endeavor. The UFC produces events worldwide that showcase twelve weight divisions and abide by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts.
The show proved extremely successful with 86,592 television subscribers on pay-per-view.
With no weight classes, fighters often faced significantly larger or taller opponents. Many martial artists believed that technique could overcome these size disadvantages, and that a skilled fighter could use an opponent's size and strength against him. With the 175 lbs. Royce Gracie winning three of the first four events, the UFC quickly proved that size does not always determine the outcome of the fight.

Remembering UFC 1 (3 minutes)
Watching a guy with one boxing glove fight, watching a super wrestler getting his teeth kicked out and seeing someone getting  choked out by a gee, they´re all things you don´t typically see in MMA fights but they´re all important events in the history of MMA and they all occurred in UFC N° 1.

Eight of the deadly fighters of the world will meet in no holds barred combats to determine who is the Ultimate Fighting Champion.

Twenty three years ago in November 1993 the world was introduced to the Ultimate Fighting Championship at UFC 1. If you´ve only been introduced to the UFC in the last 10 years or so you might be surprised at how different the Ultimate Fighting Championship was compared with today´s UFC bounce.

Eight street tough warriors wedge combat in a battle where anything can happen and probable will.

The goal of UFC 1was to determine which fighting discipline was the best. This was before martial arts were nearly as mixed as they are now.  Viewers wanted to know: could a sumo wrestler defeat a boxer or was shoot fighting a better fighting style than taekwondo? Originally the UFC was to answer this very question, with the famous Gracie fighting family believing their Brazilian jiu-jitsu was the best with their strong emphasis on grappling and submission holds.

The original UFC card had eight fighters hitting sumo versus savate, also known as French kickboxing. Kickboxing vs. kenpo, boxing vs. Brazilian jiu-jitsu and shoot fighting vs. taekwondo. There were also far fewer rules than today and a smaller purse. The winner only got $50.000 and as far as rules went it was pretty much no eyes gouges, no biting and that was pretty much it. It was also considered so violent that after UFC 1 36 states banned no rules fighting and the future fighting had to move around to find a place where it was still legal to fight.

In fact Senator John McCain called the sport reprehensible and that it degraded society in a New York Times editorial in 1995. In the event Royce Gracie and his family´s Brazilian jiu-jitsu dominated the event beating Art Jimmerson, a boxer, in the first round; Ken Shamrock, then known as a shoot fighter, in the second; and Gerard Gordeau, the savatour, in the final; submitting each opponent along the way… (2: 30 min.)
