Papa Was a Rollin' Stone es una canción de soul psicodélico, escrita por Norman Whitfield y Barrett Strong como un single para The Undisputed Truth en 1971.

Más tarde ese año, Whitfield, quien también produjo la canción, tomó a Papa Was a Rollin' Stone y la reconstruyó como una grabación de 12 minutos para The Temptations. Los cantantes de Temptations Dennis Edwards, Melvin Franklin, Richard Street y Damon Harris alternan líneas vocales, asumiendo el papel de hermanos que interrogan a su madre sobre su padre ahora muerto.
