Winston Churchill's daughter, 1979: CBC Archives
In this clip from 1979, Winston Churchill's daughter
talks about her parents' feelings toward Wallis Simpson. In the 1930s, Simpson
was at the centre of a royal scandal, when she allegedly became the mistress of
King Edward VIII. He
later abdicated his throne to marry her.
—I think he told her everything. He certainly showed
her all his speeches and he discussed everything with her. And she had very
strong views and he didn´t always agree with her. And I didn´t think he was
always necessary right. The
point was she had the capacity and the will to tassel with him about politics
and public affairs… y tenía puntos de vista definitivos
sobre las personas y desaprobaba a varios de sus amigos porque tenían una mala
influencia en él o eran malos políticamente.
—Y pienso que no estaba loca por Lord Beaverbrook.
