… I´m so happy about it (The Last of the Mohicans)

—Do you think it is your best work today?

—I think it´s the best film I´ve ever done. Michael Mann, the director, has to take complete credit for it, because his total obsession with it and I think few directors had that kind of drive. I´d do almost anything he asked me because everything he does is so wonderful. And when I saw the film I was so moved that I wept and was this enormous relief. These kinds of things are not made that often.

—Not they are not and with the budget crunch that we are in now.

—You have to admire the studio for doing this picture. I have this tremendous sweep to it and it´s Michael´s baby.

—The locations are so gorgeous. I mean you just want to scream and so wonderful and so lovely you want to run out there real fast and see all of that. When you´re making a movie in those kind of locations it´s not easy.

—No, you never really feel you´re a part of this earth when you´re doing that and your real life completely evaporates and that´s something I´m all too willing to allow to happen. I´m gonna go looking for land in North Carolina because I was incredibly happy there.

—What were some of the hardships?

—It was very trying at times because you´re not in control of the environment and there are many people. On certain days we had 900 hundred people there on the set. You didn´t know what was going to happen from one second to the next. I´d get nutty sometimes and jump on the back of a four-wheel drive pick-up and go dashing in and out of streams and rivers and make the 80´s come and chase me. Just that kind of relief to light some tension completely mud spluttered and Michael would look at me and said “I´m not even gonna ask what happened”

—Working with Daniel Day-Lewis, wonderful actor, but I take you didn´t know him before? Were you a little apprehensive about working with him?

—No, not at all. Daniel is the kindest person you can imagine and very, very gentle. He´s unusual because he never interferes in another person´s process and we just had a very good working relationship…

—Your character showed me that you could have played the woman in Dances with Wolves. You had worked with Kevin Costner in Revenge. Did Kevin ever ask you to be in Dances with Wolves?

—No, I mean Mary McDonnell was so wonderful, she´s such an unusual wonderful choice. I can´t imagine anybody else in that part…
