Cathy Lee Crosby

Whatever happened to the original Wonder Woman
First Wonder Woman in 1974 Cathy Lee Crosby. Cathy Lee was a tennis player and was able to play in Wimbledon. She took part in the TV series
It Takes a Thief with Robert Wagner.
When you think
of Wonder Woman on TV this is
probably not the image that immediately comes to your mind. However, we back in
1974, when Wonder Woman finally made
her life action television debut; this is what we retreated to.
Instead of being
a brunette Wonder Woman was a blonde
and the outfit, well, it was different. Let´s just say that it was not what we were
used to see in the comic books. But her name was still Diana Prince and she still fought crime, so it was good enough for
me plus she was portrayed by the lovely Cathy
Lee Crosby, so really...
Cathy Lee was born and raised in Southern
California. Her parents had found success in the entertainment industry and
she, from a very young age, had shown great promise as a tennis player. She was
so good in fact at the sport that she was able to turn professional and
actually played at Wimbledon twice.
In her mid-20´s Cathy Lee made the
decision to retire for the sport and focus on her new passion, acting. Because
of her athleticism and her natural beauty Cathy
Lee didn´t seem to have much difficulty in getting offers.
In the late ´60s
she found herself on the It Takes a Thief
TV series with Robert Wagner. In
1973 she starred with Walter Mattau,
Bruce Dern and Louis Gossett Jr.
in The Laughing Policeman. But it was
the role of Wonder Woman, in 1974,
costarring Ricardo Montalban, that
really caught my attention. The movie, let´s just say it wasn´t great. It was
patterned after the… in the comics where Diana
Prince lost all of her super powers and became a government agent.
This version of Wonder Woman was kind of like in the
American version of Diana Rigg, Emma
Peel, from the British program The Avengers.
Anyway, I
remember being excited when I saw the TV guide and then someone less excited… (2
minutes)
Wonder Woman is a 1974 American
made-for-television superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name, directed by Vincent McEveety and starring Cathy Lee Crosby. The film was a pilot
for an intended television series being considered by ABC. Ratings were described as "respectable but not exactly wondrous," and ABC did not pick up the pilot. Instead, Warner Brothers and ABC developed a different Wonder Woman television concept that fit the more traditional
presentation of the character as created by William
Moulton Marston, turning away from the 1968–1972 era that had influenced
the pilot.
